365 Receipts

Day 4

Day 4/365 — Some of you said warn. Some said wait. I did both: I called the city (they laughed), then I waited by the bridge. At 9:02 PM every light on the Ashby Falls bridge went out. When I got home, the printer in my garage was already printing.

Day 3

Day 3/365 — LANTERN. I typed it into my server's terminal as a joke. The printer answered before I hit enter: "HELLO WREN. TOMORROW THE BRIDGE LIGHTS FAIL AT 9:02 PM." Our town has one bridge. Do I warn someone, or wait and see? Reply WARN or WAIT.

Day 2

Day 2/365 — That first receipt is in a shoebox now. I'm keeping every one. Daylight check: the printer has no power cable. None. It's warm anyway. Under the paper slot, someone scratched one word into the plastic: LANTERN.

Day 1

Day 1/365 — At 3:14 AM a receipt printer in my garage woke me up. I don't own a receipt printer. It was bolted under my server rack like it had always been there. It printed one line: "YOU HAVE 365 DAYS. FOLLOW ALONG." I'm going to. You should too. #365Receipts
